The Women Weightlifters of Egypt

Egypt has won more Olympic medals in weightlifting than in any other sport. While traditionally seen as a ‘male sport’, Sara Ahmed won bronze at the Rio Games in 2016 and in doing so has inspired a new generation of female athletes to take to the mat.

Verity Ratcliffe went to Alexandria to meet some of Egypt’s women weightlifters.
