BBC Minute: On the world's most valuable black artist
New York street artist Jean-Michel Basquiat died of a heroin overdose in 1988. He was friends with Andy Warhol, David Bowie, Blondie and Madonna.
He has now become the world's most valuable black artist after a powerful 1982 painting of a skull sold for $110.5 million at Sotheby’s. BBC's Arts editor, Will Gompertz, says black artists are increasingly being recognised by critics and collectors.
