A former head of the FBI has been appointed as special prosecutor to investigate alleged Russian interference in the US presidential election last year. The White House was given almost no notice of the announcement.

And in Brazil, a newspaper says it has obtained a recording of President Michel Temer authorising illicit payments to a possible witness in a corruption. The Brazilian leader has denied the report.
