In one week we'll finally know the result of France's presidential election. Polls consistently point to the centrist candidate Emmanuel Macron beating the far-right candidate Marine Le Pen. France will be on extra high alert today as protesters use the traditional May 1st marches to stage a show of force against Marine Le Pen.

One of the most celebrated climbers in the world - Ueli Steck - has been killed on Mount Everest. He was known as the "Swiss Machine" for the speed at which he could ascend some of the toughest peaks. He died in an accident while climbing solo to acclimatise for an attempt on the mountain, without oxygen. Stephen Venables, the first Briton to climb up Mount Everest without bottled oxygen, pays tribute.

Mark Zuckerberg - CEO of Facebook – had told staff he wanted to meet traditional Democrats who had voted for Donald Trump as president. The Silicon Valley team got to work, and found Daniel Moore - who voted for Barack Obama twice, but campaigned heavily for Mr Trump. He tells Newsday what he thought when Mr Zuckerberg turned up for dinner unexpectedly.
