French Presidential Election: Losing Candidates Support Macron

The losing centre-right and socialist left candidates said they were now switching their allegiance to Mr Macron.

The centrist Emmanuel Macron and Marine le Pen of the National Front will go through to the final round of the presidential election in two weeks time. Speaking after projections confirmed the first round results, Mr Macron said his job would be to become president for the whole country.

The president of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro has said he wants to resume talks with the opposition to find a way out of the country's political crisis.

Senior politicians in Afghanistan have questioned the US policy of targeting Islamic State targets over those of the Taliban in the country.
