New Year Delayed By One Second
A "leap second" will be added to this year's New Year's countdown to compensate for a slowdown in the Earth's rotation.
An extra second will be added to clocks at New Year by the world's timekeepers - making the countdown to midnight take a little longer. This is being done to keep our time in sync with the Earth's rotation.
