Actress Debbie Reynolds has died just one day after her daughter Carrie Fisher

US actress Debbie Reynolds has died, a day after the death of her daughter Carrie Fisher, her son has announced. The Hollywood legend is best known for her role in the 1952 musical Singin' in the Rain, opposite Gene Kelly. Fisher - renowned for her role as Princess Leia in the Star Wars series - died on Tuesday aged 60, following a cardiac arrest on a plane.

Turkey's foreign minister says it has agreed with Russia a proposal for a ceasefire in Syria, where they back opposing sides in the civil war. Mevlut Cavusoglu said a document outlining a political solution to the conflict was also "ready", and that both could be "implemented any time".

India is pressing ahead with controversial plans to build the world's largest statue. The sculpture of the Hindu warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji, will reach 395 feet and cost more than $525 million dollars. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has enthusiastically backed the project, has laid the foundation stone off the coast of Mumbai. The sculptor - Ram Sutar - has suggested that if Shah Jahan had worried about the cost of the Taj Mahal, it may never have been built. Newsday spoke to Ujjal Dosanjh - a Canadian politician born in India - who believes that the two projects are not comparable.
