Monday night’s Christmas market attack gives political opponents an opportunity to attack Chancellor Merkel

The so-called Islamic State have claimed responsibility for the attack on a Christmas market that left twelve people dead and many more injured. No evidence of the connection has been presented, but the announcement places additional pressure on Chancellor Angela Merkel. Her political opponents on the right are making the connection between the attack and the Chancellor’s immigration policy.

Officials in Turkey say the policeman who shot dead the Russian ambassador in a gallery on Monday is unlikely to have been acting alone.
