Yahya Jammeh, the authoritarian president of 22 years, has suffered a surprise defeat in the general election. He came to power in a military coup in 1994. The electoral commission has called for calm. The Gambia has not had a smooth transfer of power since independence in 1965. The German Formula One driver, Nico Rosberg, has announced his retirement from the sport, days after winning the world championship for the first time. The UN warns up to one hundred thousand people could be at risk of starvation in north eastern Nigeria.
