Brazil: ex-Speaker Expelled from Congress

Brazil politics; China riots; Arctic discovery.

The powerful former speaker of the lower house of the Brazilian Congress, Eduardo Cunha, has lost his seat after an overwhelming vote by fellow members of Congress to eject him. Mr Cunha - seen as the architect of former president Dilma Rousseff's impeachment - could now face arrest.

In China, video footage has emerged which appears to show the Chinese authorities in violent clashes with residents of a village once held up as a rare example of genuine democratic reform. It shows riot police armed with tear gas confronting residents of the southern fishing village of Wukan.

The long-lost ship of British polar explorer Sir John Franklin, HMS Terror, has been found in pristine condition at the bottom of an Arctic bay, researchers have said, in a discovery that challenges the accepted history behind one of polar exploration's deepest mysteries.
