A cessation of hostilities has come into effect in Syria, but how widely will it be observed? The Syrian army says it is implementing the truce, which began at sunset, but rebel groups have been more guarded. How have the first few hours gone and when might humanitarian groups be able to take action?
In Zambia, President Edgar Lungu will finally be inaugurated later today. It was supposed to have happened last month but was delayed after the opposition filed complaints, claiming his election victory was rigged. Both the High Court and Supreme Court have since dismissed the challenges.
As the Paralympics continue in Rio, Lauritta Onye has won Nigeria's first Paralaympic gold in athletics with a world record breaking 8.4 meter shot put throw. Meanwhile, British swimmer Ellie Simmonds has won gold at a third consecutive Paralympic games in the 200m individual medley swimming – all at the age of 21. And, New Zealand's Liam Malone has broken Oscar Pistorius' world record in the 200m sprint.
