Commemorating the First Day of the Somme Offensive, 1st July 1916

19,240 British dead in bloodiest day; EU Leave voters; Author, Elechi Amadi remembered.

100 years ago a battle began in northern France, known as The Battle of the Somme named after the river there. Over 5 months more than a million men were killed or wounded. We have coverage of the ceremonies in central London, our correspondent Allan Little in northern France looks back at the first day of the battle and we have archive audio of a Somme veteran Harry Taylor.

Newsday's David Whitty is talking to farmers in rural Lincolnshire (eastern England) about the reasons and ramifications of voting Leave in the recent EU referendum.

We go to Nigeria for reactions to the death of the celebrated author Elechi Amadi, who has died at the age of eighty-two. His most famous book 'The Concubine', which explores the culture of marriage in Nigeria, was published fifty years ago and remains a recommended text, widely read in schools across Africa. His other books include 'Sunset in Biafra' and 'Peppersoup'. We spoke to some of his fans in Nigeria.
