
UK Goes to Polls in EU Referendum
Historic EU referendum begins in the UK; Democrats occupy congress; The battle for Sirte
People in Britain will begin voting shortly (07b) in an historic referendum on the country's membership of the European Union. They will be asked to answer a single question on the ballot form: 'Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?'
There have been extraordinary scenes in the US Congress, where Democratic Party politicians are staging a sit-in to demand tighter gun laws. They've occupied the floor of the House of Representatives late into the night. The Republican speaker, Paul Ryan, was shouted down when he attempted to resume normal proceedings.
In Libya government-backed forces have made their largest gains yet against the fighters of so-called Islamic State. Local militia are being supported in a major offensive by British special forces. The fighting has been going on since last month. Yesterday was the toughest day so far, with nearly 50 fighters killed and over 140 wounded on the government side.
