The appointment of the former Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva as Chief of Staff at a time of allegations of corruption have sparked protests.

President Obama has nominated a new US Supreme Court judge, Merrick Garland. However the Republicans, who have a majority in the Senate, say they will block his appointment as they want the next President to make the selection.
