Ameenah Gurib-Fakim is the new president of Mauritius. She is a Biologist by training and has been talking about her ambitions for scientific development leading to economic growth. She has also reacted to the sexism row sparked by comments by Sir Tim Hunt.
Former Brazilian footballer Zico has confirmed he intends to stand for election to succeed Sepp Blatter as president of Fifa. Zico said he felt it was his duty to use his experience to stand for the top job. The Australian Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, has urged Asia-Pacific nations to join together to help fight jihadist groups. He told ministers from 25 nations at a regional security conference in Sydney that Islamic State had global ambitions
