Emergency workers in China are searching for survivors of a cruise ship that sank in the Yangtze River with more than 450 people on board. Most of them are still unaccounted for.

The former leader of the Britain's Liberal Democrats party, Charles Kennedy, has died suddenly. He was 55 years old. Mr Kennedy lost his seat in Scotland in last month's general election. Nine years ago he resigned as party leader.

A court in Canada has ordered three multi-national tobacco companies to pay 12.3 billion US dollars in damages to smokers. It is the biggest award in Canadian legal history.
