Search for Ship Survivors

Search for survivors after a cruise sank in the Yangtze River, a court in Canada hands down $12B tobacco damages, love locks removed from Paris bridge.

Emergency workers in China are searching for survivors of a cruise ship that sank in the Yangtze River with more than 450 people on board. Most of them are still unaccounted for.

A court in Canada has ordered three multi-national tobacco companies to pay $12.3bn (US dollars) in damages to smokers. It is the biggest award in Canadian legal history.

Officials in Paris have started removing hundreds of thousands of padlocks from the side of a bridge over the river Seine. The tradition of fastening a lock on the Pont des Arts and throwing the key into the river below started in the 19th Century as a way of immortalising a couple's love. Now, though, the council says that the million locks on the bridge weigh around 45 tonnes - and that is damaging the bridge's structure.
