South African novelist, Andre Brink, talks about his latest novel, Philida, based on a real woman, a slave, bought and sold by one of his ancestors.
He talks about the lessons to be learned from that time and questions whether South Africa today has learnt anything from slavery, and perhaps whether the violence and oppressiveness of that time has been overshadowed by Apartheid. Is now the time to dig deeper?
