More than two years after the Sri Lankan army conclusively defeated the separatist Tamil Tigers there is powerful evidence to suggest both sides committed serious war crimes in the closing stages of the conflict.
A UN panel concluded as much in April. Last month graphic video footage screened on British television added to the international pressure for an independent investigation.
