Brazil prison massacre
In October 1992, the Brazilian police massacred 111 prisoners during a riot at the infamous Carandiru jail.
Dr Drauzio Varela worked in the prison and his experiences inspired a hit film.
A police raid on the Carandiru jail in Brazil in October 1992 led to the worst prison massacre in Brazilian history. 111 inmates were killed when the riot squad went on the rampage.
Drauzio Varela is a doctor who worked inside the prison. He wrote a best-selling book about the experience which inspired the hit film, Carandiru Station.
