The Monkey Trial
The Monkey Trial pitted religion against science. In 1925 America was gripped. It began an argument over the teaching of evolution in American schools which continues today.
Eighty-five years ago the small town of Dayton Tennessee was transformed by the Monkey Trial. Religion was pitted against science when a young teacher was tried for teaching Darwin's theory of evolution.
Two of the most famous lawyers in America - William Jennings Bryan and Clarence Darrow - battled it out in court and America was gripped. It began an argument over the teaching of evolution in schools which continues today.
