The Euro: Politics before Economics?

When does a common currency area like the Eurozone function smoothly and when does it have problems? The US has a common currency. How do differences there get ironed out? How can the US accommodate economies as different as California and Alabama while the Eurozone has diffiuclties including Greece and Germany?
