Daniel Fried is one of the team charged by President Obama with closing down the Guantanamo Bay detention centre. He is responsible for persuading third countries to accept and resettle those detainees the United States has cleared for release. In his first interview since he was appointed, Ambassador Fried tells Jon Manel of the difficulties he has encountered and his determination to meet the deadline set by President Obama -- that Guantanamo would be closed by the end of his first year in office.
