Florence is thrown into panic by what its citizens believe to be a destructive, fire-breathing demon. But this is no demon - it's a mechanical man designed by Leo. Piero has had it built as part of a clever scheme to overthrow the duke.

Leo now has to meet his biggest challenge. What follows is a dramatic and violent confrontation between the humble artist's apprentice and Piero de' Medici, the richest and most powerful man in the city. Poor Lorenzo has to choose between loyalty to his father or to his friends.
