Survivors recommissioned for second series on BBC One

Survivors, Adrian Hodges' (Ruby In The Smoke, Shadow In The North, Charles II and Primeval) post-apocalyptic character-based adventure series for BBC One produced by BBC Drama Production has been recommissioned for a second series it was announced today.

The drama, with a series average of 5.9 million viewers and 23.1% audience share, has been given the green light for another six episodes to broadcast next year.

The final episode in the current run will broadcast on Tuesday 23 December on BBC One at 9.00pm.

Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning: "I am delighted Survivors will be returning in 2009 with Adrian Hodges at the helm – it's been a thrilling and emotional journey, and I look forward to more twists and turns in series two."

The cast list for series one includes (in alphabetical order): Robyn Addison (The Street; Casualty); Nikki Amuka–Bird (No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency; Five Days); Max Beesley (Hotel Babylon); Julie Graham (William And Mary; Bonekickers); Paterson Joseph (Jekyll; The Beach; Peep Show); Phillip Rhys (24; Nip Tuck; Flatland); Zoe Tapper (Twenty Thousand Streets Under The Sky; The Last Van Helsing); and young newcomer Chahak Patel.

Jay Hunt, Controller, BBC One, adds: "Survivors felt slick and strangely timely in this autumn's schedule. I look forward to its return in 2009."

The original series launched in April 1975 on BBC One and ran for 38 episodes over three series.

BBC Drama Production acquired the rights to develop the drama series from the Terry Nation Estate in 2007.

Survivors by Adrian Hodges launched on BBC One on 23 November 2008 and is based on the novel written by Terry Nation.

Survivors Interactive at bbc.co.uk/survivors has enjoyed huge success with users since its launch in November.
