Controller of Digital and Technology, BBC Global News

James Montgomery is Controller of Digital and Technology for BBC Global News. He is responsible for the editorial product development in news, sport and weather across the division, including BBC.com and the World Service sites in English and languages.

Prior to this, James was Director of Digital Content for BBC World News and responsible for leading the editorial development of the BBC’s commercially funded news website available outside of the UK. In addition to overseeing the news, sports and weather sites, James also lead the cross platform development of commercial content for BBC World News.

James began his career in regional newspapers in 1990, and joined the Financial Times in 1997 as News and Features Sub-Editor.

Following spells as the Deputy Features Editor and Analysis Editor, James relocated to New York to take up the role of US News Editor, heading up the editorial teams in north and south America, and covering major news stories such as the 2004 presidential election and Hurricane Katrina.

As Editor of FT.com and Assistant Editor of the newspaper from 2007, James played a leading role in the redevelopment of the website, introducing video, audio, blogging and Flash-based multimedia. He also worked on a major redesign of FT.com and on the integration of print and digital workflow in the newsroom.

James took on his previous role as Director of Digital Content for BBC World News in May 2009.
