Dot. con Vox pop: I started working for a dot com in about 1998 and, I guess, one of the reasons for working in that industry was it was a new industry. It was very exciting and part of it was stock options, so these were potential riches in the future when the company did really well. The problem and the dot. con of it was that, when the company started running out of money because it wasn't making any money itself, there was nothing else to do, but to make redundant a lot of the people in the company, so I lost my job. Tony Thorne: A dot. con (CON) is an internet based business that is worthless or useless. A couple of years ago there was the so-called dot.com boom, in which - people involved with starting up new online companies which had no real assets, just novel ideas on the internet - floated their companies on the stock exchange and made huge amounts of money, which they spent very quickly. Shortly after that the bubble burst, these companies failed and a lot of investors lost everything. Now new companies who do business on the internet are treated with a great deal of wariness or even cynicism, hence dot.con.
