To slow down, to burn out, to run out of steam VICKI: Now, stop worrying about your job, Matt. MATT: But I really do think this job is taking over my life. I've got to slow down… VICKI: Yes, you need to stop working so hard, otherwise you'll be too tired to do anything. MATT: That's right - if I don't slow down, I'm going to burn out… VICKI: Exactly - and if you burn out through working too hard, you won't be able to do your job properly anyway! VICKI: So, pace yourself - work more slowly. Don't run out of steam before you get to the top! MATT: You're right, I don't want to run out of steam - I don't want to use all my energy before I can get promoted again. Examples: to slow down: When I retire, I'm looking forward to slowing down a bit and not being so busy. to burn out: He was a really famous pop star, but he did too much at once and burned out before his second album. to run out of: I wanted to finish my essay this week but I've run out of time. Exercises: to slow down: I'm working really hard for my exams - I'll slow down after they're finished. to burn out: He trained so hard for the marathon that he burnt out before the race. to run out of: Stop eating those sweets - you'll run out before the film starts.
