Following riots in Timisoara in December 1989 protesting against his regime, an increasingly desperate Romanian President Nicolae Ceausescu addressed a huge rally in Bucharest, covered live by state television, in an attempt to quell the unrest. However, as John Simpson reports, his appearance only fanned the flames of revolution.
