Answers

1. Sweden received more applications than any other European country, 16%. France and Britain shared second and third with 13% each of total asylum applications to the EU27.
2. Of the 28,300 applicants, most came from Afghanistan, of which 63% were refused. You are most likely to be refused if you come from China, with over 90% of Chinese applicants refused.
3. An official Home Office study in 2005, calculated there were about 450,000 to 500,000.
4. An amnesty would bring £1bn in extra taxes and save costs of £4.7bn needed to deport them say the IPPR. But opponents point to the increased problems for housing, health services and crime.

6. Most jobs are taken up as factory workers. Two hundred and seventy thousand migrants from the EU accession countries were registered in the industry between May 2004 and December 2006.
