Answers - Sweden received more applications than any other European country, 16%. France and Britain shared second and third with 13% each of total asylum applications to the EU27.
- Of the 28,300 applicants, most came from Afghanistan, of which 63% were refused. You are most likely to be refused if you come from China, with over 90% of Chinese applicants refused.
- An official Home Office study in 2005, calculated there were about 450,000 to 500,000.
- An amnesty would bring £1bn in extra taxes and save costs of £4.7bn needed to deport them say the IPPR. But opponents point to the increased problems for housing, health services and crime.
