A little scary and gruesome for the very young but everyone can enjoy it.You don't even need to bring a child, though plenty did. The bloody tale of Jim Hawkins and Long John Silver was brought vividly to life by the amazing talents of Andy Cannon and Iain Johnstone. As I sat down with my two nephews, I wondered if I had made a mistake. There were so many noisy little children running around. Then the lights came down and the instant silence was magical. Despite all the sugar and caffeine the children sat still for two hours on the edge of their seats listening to every word. Forget about the cinema if you want to take the children out this week take them to the Playhouse. There was plenty of opportunity to let off steam laughing at the jokes and joining in with the pirate song and the pirate noises. The highly creative and imaginative set might have inspired some to recreate it at home. There were certainly plenty of cries of "don't mention Trevor" and "I don't know" outside the theatre. This timeless tale of buccaneers, buried gold and adventure on the high seas is brought to town by Wee Stories theatre. Sticking close to the plot they have taken an original slant that includes a double bass and a ukulele. There was plenty of humour to be had as the cast of two took on every role with a simple but effective style. From Jim Hawkins, his Mum, the Squire, to all the pirates and even Long John's parrot! Forget Harry Potter "Hawkins, Jim Hawkins" is the new hero. Everyone loves swords, swashbuckling and fighting pirates. |
