He achieved this on the Iffley Road track, Oxford, on 6 May 1954, in a time of 3 min 59.4 sec. The same year he claimed gold at the 1954 Commonwealth Games in Vancouver. Sir Roger Bannister then became a consultant neuro-surgeon and Master of Pembroke College, Oxford.
