Wantage is the birth place of Alfred The Great. King Alfred was reportedly born in 849 and is credited with bringing together the warring Angleo Saxon tribes and creating the English Nation. He established a legal code, improved literacy and is the only king to be referred to as The Great. This picture shows the market place in Wantage where there is a statue of King Alfred. The town is surrounded by historical locations including the ancient Ridgeway National Trail which is just 3.5 kilometres out of town. There is also Iron Age hill forts, such as Segsbury Camp and Uffington Castle, Bronze Age burial mounds, Wayland's Smithy, one of the Britain's most impressive prehistoric tombs and the White Horse which gives the district its name.
