The wide diversity of the work on show ranges from traditional crafts to contemporary installations and encompasses the spectrum of arts media, including painting, drawing photography, audio/visual, bookbinding, paper making, jewellery, textiles and stained glass. In recognition of the artistic creation the county is capable of producing, the work of two prominent Oxfordshire artists will also be on show for the duration of Artweeks. These will be John Buckley at the Ashmolean Museum and Jan Crombie at the Said Business School. | | Artwork by John Buckley |
John Buckley, The Landmines Exhibition, The Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. The artist who famously created a giant shark crashing through the roof of a suburban house in Oxfords Headington, exhibits this series of sculptures created from the hand-made artificial limbs of victims of landmines in Cambodia. The limbs, made for victims before they could get medical prosthetics fitted in hospital, are roughly hewn from wood, metal and shoe soles. The result is a collection of evocative and charged objects which are an amalgam of Buckleys own creations and the found prosthetics. 11th to 30th May. Tue-Sat 10-5; Sun 2-5. Free admission. | | Artwork by Jan Crombie |
Jan Crombie at the Said Business School, Oxford. Crombie has created a new series of large scale acrylic paintings that seek to test the symbolic value of found objects and in so doing refer to the emotions that stem from tragic events that evolve with the passage of time. Objects, arranged on the canvas without perspective, often have associations that refer back to the artists Hungarian ancestry and her familys experiences of the Holocaust. 17th to 30th May. Mon-Fri 10-6; Sat-Sun 11-3. Free admission.
