The Rollright Stones are said to be the petrified bodies of a band of knights that tried to take over England. On top of a hill in North Oxfordshire they were literally stopped in their tracks by a witch called Mother Shipton who turned them to stone where they stood.
Claude Duval was born in Normandy and came to Britain as a Footman to the Duke of Richmond. Once here he sustained a wealthy lifestyle by becoming the head of a notorious gang of highway men. Duval was famed for his way with the ladies. So much so that many high profile women appealed for a pardon before he was hung. Now it is said that he haunts The Hopcroft's Holt Hotel' near Steeple Aston were he once murdered the landlord.
Francis Lovell is said to haunt the old Minster between Witney and Burford where he was appointed Viscount in 1483. Lovell sided with the wrong King and when Richard III was defeated at the battle of Bosworth Field he disappeared. After leading a number of other uprisings against the new King Henry VII he is said to have hidden away in a secret chamber at the Minster cared for by a loyal servant but when his servant died unexpectedly he left the Viscount to starve in his hidden chamber. He wasn't discovered until 1708 when works uncovered his skeleton still sat at his desk.
St Sepulchres in Walton Street is one of the last remaining green spaces in the area and yet it's hardly ever seen. Hidden down a dark alley is the disused grave yard with strong University connections. If you take ashort walk around and you'll discover everyone from Deans to Porters who, legend has, it carry on their bussiness late at night.
