Canal hopes for city centre - in pictures
Boats at boatyard in Jericho
A colourful muddle of narrowboats at a boatyard in Jericho.

Oxford has been accused of making too little of its many waterways.

Its Capital of Culture bid includes ambitious plans to bring the water into the heart of the city, by recreating a lost canal basin.

Canal overflow

Worcester Street car park
There are plans to excavate the original canal wharves under the Worcester Street car park, complete with shops and cafes.

Nuffield College pond
The car park is owned by Nuffield College - whose pond lies along the line of a lost section of the canal.

towpath garden and bbq

Oxford has its own community of boat people, with gardens and barbecues on the towpath. They inspired the canal dwellers in Philip Pullman's Dark Materials novels.


New flats

Smart flats are taking over from industrial buildings along the canal.


Lazing on a narrowboat

Oxford may not be making the best use of the canal... but some people definitely have the right idea.
