Speaking to our homegrown Olympic rowers

Watch our interviews ahead of the Beijing games.

Steve Williams

No other Olympic sport has more importance to our area than rowing. Nearly half of the 43 rowers going to Beijing were born, live or train locally. The sport was dominated for years by Sir Steve Redgrave and Matthew Pinsent. For the first time in 20 years neither will be in the Olympics. But Britain still believes their legacy will be continued.

The narrowest of margins secured gold for Britain in Athens four years ago. Only one member of that crew remains - Steve Williams.

Alex Partridge

Time to spare a thought too for Alex Partridge. The 27 year old Henley resident missed out in Athens after suffering a collapsed lung. The crew named the boat after him as they rowed to their narrow victory. This time he's missed out on the four again. He's been moved to the eights where he helped them win gold in the last World Cup race.

Arguably Britain's clearest hope in Beijing does come in the Women's Quadruple Sculls. They won silver in Athens, but for the past three years have been World Cup champions. Despite a slip up against China on the way Wheatley's Frances Houghton is hoping to go one better in Beijing.
