Snake's Heads at Iffley Meadows

Iffley Meadows Nature Reserve

Find out about the wide variety of wildlife at this unspoilt meadowland.

The sight of thousands of purple and white chequered snake's-head fritillaries at the Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust's (BBOWT) Iffley Meadows Nature Reserve will take your breath away. These ancient wet meadows, crossed by old river channels with willow-lined ditches, have a wide variety of wildlife.

Iffley Meadows

Iffley Meadows

Our Wildlife Detectives Gavin and Jo went out to see this unspoilt meadowland that lies so close to the city centre. They heard the sounds of cuckoos and sedge warblers as they walked the wet fields, tip-toeing amongst the delicate fritillaries. Cuckooflower, meadow sweet, meadow rue and adders tongue fern were all spotted during the walk - a real sign that Spring had arrived!
