Vernon Coaker taught at Bigwood School in Nottingham while serving as both a Parish and Borough councillor. His life changed dramatically in 1997 when he defeated the Conservative Junior Minister Andrew Mitchell to become MP for Gedling.  Alan Simpson MP

He worked for the Racial Equality Council for thirteen years during which time he had books published on racism and policing. He set up the pilot project for the Home Office experiment into "non custodial treatment of offenders" which subsequently became a piece of national legislation relating to criminal justice.

A former head teacher, she joined Broxtowe Borough Council in 1989. By 1995 she was its deputy leader. Two years later she had been elected MP for Erewash.
