
 BBC Radio Nottingham's presenter Jeff Owen is hosting Stroke Awareness Week

BBC Radio Nottingham is producing a series of programmes to promote Stroke Awareness.
They start on Monday 28th January 2002 and run throughout the week.
As part of the national campaign for Stroke Awareness, BBC Radio Nottingham has been following four people whose lives have been affected by strokes. The programmes will be broadcast around 11.20am during the week, 28th Jan to 1st Feb 2002. The 'Mid-Morning' show will also include live phone-ins, where listeners have the chance to discuss their concerns and have their questions about strokes answered by the Medics. Rosemary Conley, health and fitness expert, will be giving Information on exercise routines and healthy eating.
You will be able to find out about the latest treatments, the effects on family and friends and where to find support.
MONDAY 28TH JANUARY: What is Stroke? The obvious question kicks off the Stroke Awareness Week.
Phone-in with the doctors Dr. Tom Venables ( Radio Nottingham Doctor). David Seddon, Lead Clinician for Stroke at the Queens Medical Centre.
A chance to discuss the subject allowing listeners to discuss their concerns and have their questions answered by the Medics. Part One of Pauls Diary Following the progress of Paul, a 25 year old stroke patient who suffered a stroke in September 2001. Jeff Owen has been following his recovery from the Stroke Ward to life at home, re-habitation and life as an ex-patient. Amandas Story:"How a stroke saved my life" The remarkable story of 18 year old Amanda North, from Rotherham, who suffered a stroke whilst on a day out at the National Watersports Centre. But the stroke was a clue to an underlying, and to that point, undiagnosed fatal heart tumour. | TUESDAY 29TH JANUARY: The effect on family and friends. Today the programme focuses on the effect that a stroke has on the immediate family and friends, as well on the patient. Advice, information, help and support.

Part Three of "Pauls Diary" How Paul began his road to recovery in the early days. | THURSDAY 31st JANUARY: Reducing the Risks We look at the various ways we can all help reduce the risk of a stroke by following a healthier lifestyle. Studio Guests: Simon Millward, of the Stroke Association. Rosemary Conley, with advice and guidance on healthy eating and exercise. Blood Pressure Testing Session: at the Broadmarsh Shopping Centre in Nottingham. Koshina Asian Stroke Support Group: We hear from Tish Sood of the Koshina Asian Stroke Support Group about the work they do to spread the message within the Asian Community. Part Four of "Pauls Diary" Paul tells of how life is now having to relearn skills. | FRIDAY 1ST FEBRUARY: Rehabilitation and Rebuilding Conclusion to Stroke Awareness Week Studio Guests: Paul Tomlinson of Pauls Diary in live with Jeff to talk about how his life is today. Also a chance for listeners to chat to him. Dr. Tom Venables returns to recap the key points that weve discussed over the week. "Different Strokes": support group for under 25s. Also in the Studio Phil Collis of "Different Strokes", a group specifically for under 25s in the West Midlands. He will talk about his group and his aims to set one up here in the East Midlands.
