From the trailers I saw for this film, I knew it was going to be an odd one. It was...oh yes it was terrible as well. Paul Sims I really don't see the point to this movie, there really was none, unless it was to depress with the lack of story line and thrust unsympathetic characters at the audience. | | Is it me or is this film depressing |
In all honesty they actually had the makings to take the film wherever they wanted, but instead they took it nowhere. In my opinion this is completely unforgivable. The saving grace for The Martins is Kathy Burke. She adds the only sympathetic character to the proceedings playing mother. The basic tale is of people who have and those that haven't. Lee Evans is Robert, married to Kathy Burke with a pregnant teenage daughter, and a son with no friends. It's the cliché of a scrounging waster who puts more energy into entering competitions than finding a job.

Robert Martin is a dreamer and increasingly gets himself into trouble just trying to stand up for his family. The problem is, was the film trying to be gritty or funny, because at times it hints at both but ultimately isn't either. Evans is a good actor himself and plays Robert well, bringing seething anger suddenly bursting through his boyish innocence, and I was originally taken in that this was going to be a study of his character falling apart but no it wasn't. It was just a boring film. Be warned also that there is a large (and I mean huge) amount of swearing in the film. In fact there are times when a swear word is every second word. |
