Tributes for Jimmy Sirrel

Notts County's greatest ever manager, Jimmy Sirrel, has died at the age of 86. Please leave your tributes...

Jimmy Sirrel was widely regarded as Notts County's greatest ever manager.

He took over at Notts County in 1969 and led them to the first division for the first time in the club's history. Jimmy had three spells at the club, they were 1969-75, 1978-82 and 1985-87.

The funeral

His funeral took place on Tuesday 7 October. The cortege set off from Meadow Lane to St Mary's Church in the Lace Market.

The coffin was carried into church by six pallbearers - all former Notts players... Ian McParland (the current Notts manager), Mick Leonard, Iain McCulloch, Jon Nixon, Les Bradd and Dean Yates.

Tributes

Don Masson, former player says: "I owe everything from my football career to Jimmy."

Sir Alex Ferguson, a friend of Jimmy's, says: "I'd be confident of Jimmy Sirrel managing a football team I supported, I think that's testimony... That would be the general opinion from all the managers in the game."

Les Bradd, former player says: "We certainly feared him on match days when he was throwing jugs tea at us. We feared him on non-match days, training sessions... Generally Jimmy was a friend to the players and he was an amusing character, he would tell funny stories [and] we would laugh at him."

Please leave your tributes and memories of Jimmy below:

rest in peace jimmy

This is going to sound silly but when I was little my dad did some work at the County Ground one summer. It was just mending something in the dressing rooms but he took me with him to see the place. I ran out of the dressing room pretending I was a player and kicked a pretend ball into the net etc etc. Just then Jimmy Sirrel came out and talked to my dad and watched me. He did not tell me to get off the pitch or anything but let me play. I suspect many other managers would have chosen to do otherwise because they could. I was always a Forest supporter but never forget this kindness to a small child. RIP Jimmy.

Barry (Stapleford)
From a Forest and a fellow Socialist supporter RIP JIMMY

Andy ( Watford )

I watched his teams come to play at Blackpool and Jim knew a player when he saw one. He took his team from the lowest league level to the top.Says it all about the man.

Notts County were somewhere with Jimmy. May he rest in peace.

Steve, Florida
I am very sad to hear of Jimmy's passing. Saw my team, Burnley, play Notts Co many times in the 70's & 80's. Jimmy was one of the last of a dying breed of Manager that lived and breathed football.

Jane Kirk
Will be sadly missed. A wonderful character who certainly put Notts County on the map. Many happy memories. Re-united with his beloved wife.

Donna Thorneloe
In the early 80's I had my leg in plaster and my Mum rang Notts to ask if any of the players would sign my cast. Jimmy invited us into his office and got all the players lined up, even those who were receiving treatment! They then all signed my cast! He was a lovely man who will never be forgotten.

Paul Miller
Thanks to my father taking my brother and I to Meadow Lane in our formative years, Jimmy Sirrel made our boyhood heros, Steve Carter, Ian Scanlon, Iain McCulloch to name a few. Jimmy Sirrel made these players our legends. He took an unfashionable 4th Division team with no money to rise to the top echelon of English football. It was a time that when you played football in the playground you was either a Notts player or Forest Player, I knew of no one who supported a non local team back then. So it is then, that thanks to Jimmy Sirrel I have some of the fondest childhood memories. God bless.

Darryl Wade
Jimmy, before he fell ill, would,on a couple of occasions, come onto the pitch at half time as a guest of the club. The applause he got was tremendous and the feeling of being in awe of this great man was very emotional.God bless you Jimmy.

Alan White

I had the pleasure of seeing Jimmy Sirrels teams and enjiyed many aftermatch drinks in the Centenary Club with Jimmy and his late wife Kathy. Jimmy Sirrel was a genuinly nice man and the true worth of this great man was never more stated than having Sir Alex Ferguson present at the funeral. May you rest in peace Jimmy, thanks for so many wonderful memories.

alan osbourne
jimmy was the best manager we ever add he took us all the way god bless jimmy

Paul Kirk
We visited some far off places with Jimmys teams but you always knew what you were going to get. 100% effort til the final whistle, nothing less would be accepted by Jimmy win, draw or lose. What joy you and your boys gave us Jimmy to have got us to the First division on the resources that you had was astounding no wonder Mr Ferguson is a fan.

j taylor
i will be 46 on the day that jimmy is laid to rest and i am thankfull that i was around to witness his achievements, the football then was simply the best -just like the man himself.rip jim

So sad to hear of the great man's loss. Remember my Grandfather taking me to the lane in 1981 to see his teams play. His teams gave me the great love of football and Notts that I still have now. A wit, a character, a gent, a genius and a legend. Thanks for all those happy days and the many laughs. The man was simply a McGod. RIP Sir James.

we will miss u at the club its sad to hear u have passed away

I was lucky enough to be in my late teens during the late 70s and as well as watching Notts at the Lane also travelled all over the country. Jimmy built a team that feared nobody and I will never forget the trip down to Chelsea to clinch promotion. The stuff of schoolboy dreams. A few years back I met Jimmy at half time at one of the home games. A lovely genuine and canny man who sat and talked with myself and my family for 10 minutes as if we were old friends. I was completely awestruck and had a grin on my face for the rest of the day - I'd met my all-time hero. Jimmy Sirrel - brilliant manager, wonderful man God Bless and RIP

Hunterpie
We had the dreams...you made them reality.sleep safe in gods arms jimmy.A million thanks

You put us back on the football map. You gave us soul. You gave us character. You gave us a personality which makes being a Notts fan the unique feeling that it is. God bless you.

Philip Sanders Rose
Jimmy gave us all the best times of our lives as Notts supporters! Beating Clough's Forest 3-2 one of the best moments. I have, like Mark, just moved to the US- this really is the end of my old life - thanks to Jim -that life certainly had its glorious moments.RIP The Great Jimmy Sirrel

I WAS PRIVILIGED TO BE AROUND WHEN YOU AND CLOUGH/TAYLOR TRANSFORMED NOTTINGHAM FOOTBALL.THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES JIM.

mick wagstaff
Jim some years ago when Notts were in administration I wondered why I supported Notts and not the red side. I realised then that it was because of you seeing you in pictures in the evening post winning the Fourth division title I was only 11 years old and could not get to the lane. But i wondered who was this strange looking man with a team in black and white. Anyhow the following season managed to get down and support Notts. Jim you were not strange you were simply brilliant you gave me the best years through the 70's early 80's watching Notts Your style and words of wisdom were insperational and how fitting that One of your finds now leads us, so come on Charlie do it for the wee great man.JIM your were the greatest football manager ever, I will sadly miss you. Gone but never forgotten RIP.

Rich. Hucknall
A sad day. A true football man. There can't be many managers who had THREE promotions at 1 club. From bottom to top. Is this as good as title's , Fa Cups, and European cups ? I'd say it is equal. RIP Jimmy

Mike Baraniak - Spain

Marcus Darwent
Thanks to Jimmy for my happiest footballing memories. He was a great character and an all time footballing hero.

Jon Slack
I'm an ardent soccer fan. I met Jimmy in 1978 when he predicted Holland would win the world cup. I remember sitting in his front room while he explained the offside rule to me during that competition. Never a footie fan before that, I became a Magpies supporter from then on and have seen some fantastic football at the County Ground. If it wasn't for Jimmy Sirrel, I would never have enjoyed the game, never ran my own youth team, and would not now proudly display the few trophies I have. Goodbye Jimmy - it really was an honour and a pleasure knowing you.

eddie short
How lucky we were. God bless jim.

dennis bullivant

Helen Andrews
Like many people I am too young to remember the great days when Jimmy was our manager, but who could forget the rousing speech he made on the pitch just before the Bury match a couple of years ago, I believe he inspired the magpies into surviving the drop down to the conference on that day!. A great man and a great manager who will be missed in more ways than we ever thought!

Peter Gilham - Brentford FC
I only have happy memories of the time Jimmy spent at Griffin Park back in the late sixties and always looked forward to sometimes meeting him whenever Brentford visited Meadow Lane.Officially as Trainer and then Manager, but unofficially the man who was prepared to turn his hand to anything on a shoestring budget, Jimmy somehow kept the Club afloat. His on field qualities during his early days of management never particularly set the world alight, but Jimmy almost singlehandedly saw the Club through one of its lowest ebbs thanks to his boundless energy. And for that it earned him legendary status, well before his managerial feats with Notts County, from those who really knew him.He will be sorely missed by myself and many other Brentford fans.

Tony McBain-Oldham
Being an ex-pat Notts supporter living in Norfolk I felt I should add my tributes and thanks to Jimmy Sirrel for all he did for Notts, he set such a high standard that not many managers have acheived this since. I am sure that he will be sorely missed by his family and also the many friends he made both in and out of football. There's only one Jimmy Sirrell.

Colin Barratt
I never met Jimmy in person but, like thousands of other supporters felt I had a bond with him that was truly special. I know it will be said over and over but, to my generation, Jimmy Sirrel was the heart and soul of Notts County. His teams, I believe, reflected his own character: skilful, hard working, tough and honest. No matter what perils faced the club in recent seasons you always felt that we would come through for Jimmy's sake if no other. I hope that the club will always try to emulate his spirit in everything we do both on and off the field.I would also like to send my condolences to Jimmy's family at this sad time.

Colin Ross - Stourbridge
My wife and I met Jimmy in Malta in 1993 where he had a holiday home. We spent two hours with him in a nearby bar and he was fantastic company with some great stories. He insisted on buying all the drinks as well (not bad for a Scotsman!).Top Man.RIP JimmyColin (West Brom Fan)

Until 1999 I knew Jimmy only by reputation as a manager. I met him through a mutual friend in Malta and he became a friend of mine too. I am delighted to say that as a man he was every bit as good as he was a manager. He will be missed by many people. RIP Jimmy.

A very sad day. Although, I was too young to watch Notts under Jimmy, I am very aware of the impact he had on the club. Let's hope we can emulate the success Jimmy had in the mid 1980s and do him proud. RIP

Mike Hallam
Thanks for the memories Jimmy, we salute you, best wishes to your family.

I'm a Forest fan but have always admired what Jimmy did with the Magpies. Cloughie was the best but Jimmy did a fantastic job with far smaller resources and money. Nottingham has lost another legend and football has lost a real gentleman. RIP Jimmy.

Ian, North Carolina
I bumped into Jimmy behind the main stand one cold day and wanted his autograph on the days programme. Neither of us had a pen, so he took me to his office and signed the programme. A memory from when I was 10, such a caring man, God Bless.

A great man. I will never forget his impassioned pre-match talk to both sets of fans when both Notts County and Bury needed points to stay in the League on the last game of the season. He summed up everything there was to say about supporting your local team. Top man.

A hugely sad day and a day when part of the club has also died. I met Jim in 1973 as a thirteen year old with my dad, who has also passed away! It was a special time for both of us as he was a great man and larger than life itself. I remember those days and the team managed by Jimmy with great fondness and I shed a tear as I write this! The place will never be the same again! I will be there on Sat along with my son, walking in the same footsteps as me and my dad. It will be a very emotional day.

In August 1971 after Notts beat Rochdale in their first game back in the Third Division the previous Saturday I was outside Meadow Lane as a 16 year old when Jimmy came past.I told him I thought it was a good win on Saturday.Instead of ignoring me or saying thanks and walking on he spent a few minutes to give me a lecture on the subject every win in football is a good win and if there was such a thing as a bad win he would take one ahead of a draw or a defeat anytime. He was a lovely man as well a great football manager.

barry pashley

Rob Parker
A legend, a gentleman, I had the privelage of meeting Jimmy over 30 years ago as an 8 year old at Meadow Lane and then knowing him as a passionate follower of football 20 years later. Jimmy was a man who loved football, from a Sunday leage player to a full time proffesional, he loved them all. His passion and commitment to the sport should be honoured and praised. A man who created so many memories should be honoured. No knighthoods or civic awards could be anywhere near what Jimmy deserves. A fitting tribute would be to renamne Meadow Lane as the Jimmy Sirrell Stadium for all that Jimmy did through the "Dark Times" of County 75 and the work he did for the club. THE KING IS DEAD, LONG LIVE THE KING! All the best Jimmy, you did us proud!

I was lucky enough to spend time with Jimmy in his youth academy in the 80`s, he hjad the 1st ever youth academy in England. He all ways included me in 1st team training and he gave me many fond memories as a youth player. He told me many great stories and i can remeber once we had finished training with the 1st team and he called me back he planted the ball on the penalty spot and made me blast it in the back of the net, he then said "sonny you dont place it in the goal you just blast it now go and get changed" he was a fantastic inspiration in my life and will be sadly missed. We never won the same number of trophies but the legendary Jimmy Sirrel was Notts County's equivalent of Brian Clough. Lets turn up in large numbers on Saturday and give Jimmy the fantastic send off he so richly deserves.

MR CUMBERPATCH
such a sad day for all of nottingham not just notts fans, i remember going round the back off the main stand before kick off in the eighties just to watch jimmy shunting up the gantry to get a birdseye view of the match. you would'nt get the likes of mourinho and wenger doing that these days. a true gentleman who like his character stayed strong to the end. the memories jimmy will always stay as will your legendary status.RIP from a gutted fan

A man of few words, but when he talked football you listened. Mr. Notts County to us all, an excellent manager and genuine man. God bless you Gaffer, you will be missed. A Jimmy Sirrel Way? Why the hell not!

Steven
I played in a number of reserve games for Jimmy during the early 70's and he was such a great guy to play for. He would always encourage you and bring the very best from any player who played for him.

Paul...Basford
What a legend this man was. We will never see the likes of again in football. Thank you for all the great times at Notts. RIP Jimmy.

Rob
As a Forest fan, I can only say that Jimmy had the same impact at Notts as Cloughie had with us. An amazing man, a one off, articulate with a really dry sense of humour. A terrible loss for the city - Nottingham is in mourning today.

Tony D
As a Forest fan I also loved to go down the lane and see Jimmy's teams perform.RIP Jim your presence with never leave us.

Mark Greetham
I remember meeting him in the early 80's (being about 8) and being totally awe-struck, and then being told "come here wee laddie" and then felt a million dollars. I'm genuinely shocked by todays news, and another page in my clubs history closes.

david gainey

Many years ago, I had access to Jimmy Sirrel's diary/notebook. I remember one entry when he was manager of Brentford. It said something like: Went last night to watch Stockport reserves. Saw a young player who looked good, called Keegan. Asked the Chairman if I could offer £5,000 for him, but was told no.

STEVE GRIMSLEY

RIP ! A hard working genius. What he did with limited funds was staggering. A footballer's manager. He will probably be having a good chin-wag with Mr Clough at this moment about how the game should be played !!!

Chris Nelson, Long Eaton

best football quote ever was from Jimmy; "The best team always wins and the rest is only gossip"

Ian Corcoran - Manchester
I'm truly gutted. Jimmy Sirrel is Notts County. A part of our great old club has died today. That man was responsible for some of the happiest moments of my life. I'll never forget how awestruck I was when he signed my season ticket as a kid back in 1981. He thanked me for my support and thanked my mum for paying for the ticket! More recently, the great man posed for pictures when a mate had his wedding reception at Meadow Lane on a matchday last season. This made a very special occassion even more memorable. We're gonna miss you Sir Jimmy. RIP.

Having been a County boy even going to away matches before the age of 10 with my uncle watching Jimmy's teams in the late 60's and onwards the best way of summing up this sad day for the club is this. He picked Notts County up from the gutter gave them a shirt and tie and a good hair cut and the diginity to walk with the best. He gave us the ability to live the dream. Those of us from the black and white half of the city especially those over 30 will be hurting today. Indeed I feel like I lost another uncle.

Coppice83
RIP Mr Notts County,You brought great success to the boys in black n white, one day the success will return, RIP Sir Jimmy

John Shacklock
I first met Jimmy at my Uncle's house and he was so friendly and he was always having a joke with us. my tribute to Jimmy is: everyone that he met, he made them a friend of his for life.

BB
Really sad news - as a Forest fan with a Magpies' supporting dad I know what he meant to the club. A true legend and one of the last of the great generation of 1920s Glasgow-born managers

Phil Thomas
The manager who only told his players AFTER the match that his wife had died prior to the match.

Mariusz

His team in the 70's got me supporting Notts. I met the great man last year and the kind words that he gave to meare something I'll always rememeber.

Pete, a Forest Fan
Sad news, great man. Had the pleasure of meeting him a few times and always felt awe-struck. Pity James Denholm can't get over whatever his problem is and use the name of 'that man over the river' as I know JS and BC were friendly.

simon jeffery

Please send my condolences to the family of Jimmy. I'm a life long county fan. Jimmy will be sadly missed.

Pete - Cinderhill
We don't need a statue for Jimmy. The stadium itself is the best tribute to him. Meadow Lane wouldn't be there without his efforts.
