Is Nottm a 'night-time playground'?

Longer drinking hours

Many bars in Nottingham have either successfully applied to open longer or are about to have their applications granted.

It's been reported that around two thirds of the bars in Nottingham have either successfully applied to open longer or are about to have their applications granted.

Local residents

In September 2005, Nottingham writer Billy Ivory voiced his concerns about extended drinking hours especially for those living within the city.

He's worried that it's in danger of becoming a "night-time playground."

Billy Ivory
Billy Ivory - Nottingham writer

"I love the city and I want to be able to be in it at one in the morning and not necessarily be sharing in an Ibiza anthem," says Billy.

There are some that say if we increase the drinking hours similar to those abroad people might actually 'pace' themselves a little more, reducing binge drinking. Billy doesn't feel that way...

"Sitting in a café in Rome at midnight having a coffee isn't the same as a Tuesday night in Nottingham in February...

"It's not that kind of bonkers place that's in the news all the time but it could become that."

Notts Police

The Chief Constable of Nottinghamshire Steve Green appreciates Billy's concerns. However, with some cases he says he would be powerless to prevent the extension of licenses.

He says, "The reality is that if all the licenses in the city want to extend their hours, we are not going to be able to object to every one."

However, Steve Green feels the people of Nottingham will behave responsibly.

He says, "I have enormous trust in the people of Nottingham. The vast majority are responsible people...

i used to love nottingham when i lived there, but it's full of annoying students these days. now i live away i like to visit my parents, but it's a bit too big these days - it's lost its cosiness.

I grew up in Glasgow which has a bit of reputation as a violent city with a lot of drunks. Glasgow has had very liberal pub opening hours for years, but I never saw any violence on the streets. In large part I think this is due to very overt, very professional policing. Strathclyde police have lots of very large, very polite policemen who are extermely efficient at dealing with trouble & who patrol actively on foot. In Nottingham town centre you hardly ever see any police at all. It's not really their fault - our force is too small for the job. If we want a more peaceful town we need a lot more police & they have to enforce a zero tolernace policy on abussive drunks.

im against the 24hour licenses, i dont want to be in the town square at 7 in the morning on my way to work having to worry about rowdy drunks asif it was 1 in the morning.

I think it's a great idea that Nottingham is turning 24hours! There's nothing worse then when you come to the end of the night and have to go home becuase everywhere's shut. I think it'll be better aswell because it will mean that the times that people leave the bars will vary throughout the night meaning there wont be a massive drunken crowd all leaving the bars/clubs at the same time at 2am which most often is the cause of trouble on the streets.

nottingham is great place to live and the nightlife is wicked, it will be great if there's 24hr nightlife...PARTY!!!

I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THE BARS AND CLUBS OPEN LONGER IN TOWN, IT WILL ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO DRINK STEADILY THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT, MAKING THE ATMOSPHERE IN NOTTINGHAM EVEN BETTER!49 YEARS OLD

Having leaved in Nottingham during about a year, I feel that extending the opening hours could be a good idea ! Actually the problem in Notts is that people drink so quickly that they cannot behave themselves. if (as we do in France) they can drink all the night, I really think people will learn how to drink and enjoy it instead of getting drunk systematically.. Good bye from France

I had the pleasure of living in Nottingham for a year while studying at Uni back in 2002-2003. The city has a fantastic night life. However, there is more to being a great city than having 24 hour bars. In all successful cities there is a delicate balance between the various groups of people who utilize the public space in city centres. 24 hour opening has the potential to tip that balance in favour of one particular group to the detriment of the others. People are not going to want to invest in an area where their investment is put at risk by drunken yobs.

I agree with Pete - i was at college in nottingham - loved it so much - when i passed my degree i moved to London - and could not wait to move back to Nottingham. I moved back 2 years ago - and left within 6 months, i moved in to the Lace Market - where it's become a drunk's paradise. Respect for the other man has well and truly gone out of the window.

What went wrong with Nottingham? When I came back her in 1997 it was such a fantastic place to go out. Friends used to beg to come to stay. Now everyone from outside the area asks me whether I feel safe from the binge drinkers and gunmen. How did we let our great city come to this?

John Holmes, BBC
I want Nottingham to be a 24 hour city, but I share Billy's concerns. We're becoming 2 dimensional, turning into a city of purely commerce and night life. PS We need more parks and open spaces to relax, not more concrete!!

Katie, Lenton
Nottingham city centre at night may be a playground for many but is this necessarily a bad thing? Thousands enjoy the pubs and clubs, never get involved in any trouble and have a great time. If you chose to live in the city centre you've got to expect some noise Billy?

Gem
I want to be able to go out at night for as long as I want to. If people don't like the noise, move out of the city.

Pete
It's not a pleasant city to walk around at night. Flyers and vomit litter the streets and rowdy men and women makes the place feel threatening.
