Hundreds of people in North Yorkshire stopped at 12 noon to observe the three minute silence to remember the victims of the tsunami in South East Asia.
Pupils at schools throughout North Yorkshire gathered in their classrooms or at special assemblies to mark the remembrance.
In York, the Lord Mayor, the Town Crier and the Bishop of Ripon joined the huge crowds who gathered around St Helen's Square. BBC Radio York'sElly programme broadcast the silence at midday.
So far several North Yorkshire victims have been named, while others are still unaccounted for.
Britons have now pledged £76m to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) to assist victims of the tsunami. The Committee say they are expecting donations to eventually top £100m, not including direct donations to individual organisations.
