Not even my spell-checker recognised it! However, the French game of Petanque is alive and thriving in North Yorkshire. Petanque (pronounced pet - ank) originates from the south of France and is the most played sport in Marseille, yet in England it's not very well known. The game itself is similar to Boules. The opposing teams must try and get their boules as close to the jack or in Petanque's case the 'coche', as possible. Audio and Video links on this page require Realplayer ![]() Playing Petanque. The game can be played on a variety of surfaces from your back garden, to specifically designated Petanque pitches, in teams of one, two or three people. One of the key events in the Petanque calendar is coming to North Yorkshire, the English Petanque Association (EPA) Ladies Triples. EPA President Mike Pegg said "It is one of our most important tournaments. Most of the country's top players will be there to perform." ![]() Mine's closer than yours! The competition is being held at York RI Petanque Club on 2nd September 2007. As this tournament was coming to the county I decided to investigate the sport further. I had preconceptions of Petanque that it was dull and quite boring. I was wrong. After attending a training session at Wigginton Petanque Club I have found a new enthusiasm for the sport. Not only is it excellent for socialising but it's also very competitive. There were players of all ages and abilities, all competing against one another with a friendly yet combative spirit. One thing about Petanque that I enjoyed was the infectious happiness that the game possesses, no matter what the situation all players played with a smile on their face. ![]() I'll prove mine's closer! The most important thing that sport should possess is an enjoyment factor, and Petanque has this in abundance. Whether you are looking to meet new people and socialise, or start a new competitive sport then Petanque could be the solution to your problems.
