A new(s) perspective

To coincide with BBC News School Report on 22nd March 2007, Ashley and Maxine, two pupils at Harrogate Grammar School, wrote about "our concerns as young teenagers in today’s society". This is their report.

Global warming has been a pressing issue for a long time. It’s depressing to hear about how we are destroying the planet and that there will be massive flooding throughout the whole world.

The government wishes to reduce carbon emissions by 60% but we know that this is extremely difficult to fulfil. People always complain about how no one is doing anything to help the environment, but most of those accusing people aren’t doing anything themselves.

Another quite powerful issue is terrorism. Knowing that terrorists could reach and target you at any time is very frightening. And seeing what has happened in the past can have a very negative effect on someone’s sense of security.

"Some teenagers spend the most important years of their lives glued to a screen"

Something else that concerns us is today’s technology. Some teenagers spend the most important years of their lives glued to a screen. Technological advances have been good in many ways but this is also linked to the obesity problem that we have now with our younger generations.

The number of obese teenagers has doubled in the last two decades and is still rising. Although the government has started programmes to try and stop it we feel they are not doing enough. Nowadays there are much healthier menus on offer in schools but children can choose to ignore them and eat what they want.

Being a younger teenager in society today can be quite pressured, as there are a lot of different ideas to consider. It is a difficult role to play as we know we are an important part of society and we want to get it right!
