BBC Radio York's Matthew Seymour spoke to Mike Raw from Scarborough to find out what this east coast phenomenon is all about... About a year ago William Stuart and Mike Raw, who both attend Holy Apostles’ church in Scarborough, came up with a unique way for Christians to get together. They enjoy curry, so they started the Christian Curry Club. Mike Raw told BBC Radio York’s Matthew Seymour what it was all about. “We do enjoy our curries and cook at home as well, and thought what a great idea it would be to get people together and try all the curry houses in Scarborough”
So that’s just what they did, and the Christian Curry Club was born. William came up with the idea of producing some score cards so as well as having a good time, they actually score the curry houses. Marks are given for the food’s appearance, the taste, the service and the ambience of the curry house. Around 40 people have gone along over the year and usually about 20 people are there at the monthly outings. They get together, share fellowship, have a drink and a bit to eat. Anyone is welcome to join them, not just Christians. There are around seven curry houses in Scarborough, so they included takeaways as well, and they’re thinking of starting at the beginning again. They have also been thinking about exploring the rest of the world, as Mike explains: “We're wondering if we should start going to Italians, as some people don’t like curries”. But whatever they decide to do the curry will always be central to the club. One suggestion they've had for expanding the club's activities is making their favourite curries at home and getting together to share, so they can have several different curries in one evening. Matthew suggested that Christians getting together conjured up an image of tea with the vicar. But Mike reckons not... "I can see that some people may think that might be a bit boring, but people come along to the curry club and see that we’re having a good time. We have a couple of beers as well - you’ve got to have a beer to wash your curry down! We’re just normal people but we’ve got faith in god as well” Mike explained. "If anyone in the York Diocese would like to come and have a curry with us, they're very welcome." If you think you'd like to give it a go and would like to chat to William or Mike about setting up your own Curry Club, they'd be glad to give any help and advice they can.
