Graham Coxon and his band
(c) Andrew Stanistreet

Review: Graham Coxon

When Emma Jackson went to see "the father of indie rock guitar" she got more than she bargained for. Not only was Fibbers by far the most packed she's ever known it to be, but Graham Coxon availed himself for a quick chat after the gig. Rock on!

Here it is… the one you and I have been waiting for! And wasn’t it just a night to remember!? Easily the busiest I have ever seen Fibbers.

I approached the bouncers to see if there was any chance of a quick chat with the man of the night. Well if you don’t try eh? Unfortunately it didn’t work though - Humph!

Supporting band THE FUSES soon took to the stage and as they plummeted into their set, there were no stragglers left behind. The seats emptied and everyone pushed toward the stage to get a better view.

"A rather poor attempt to crowd surf was seriously hindered by the low ceiling of Fibbers!"

With tracks taken from their album “Angels are Ace” the band set the tone providing a high-energy blend of stabbing guitar, angry bass lines, aggressive drum beats and screaming vocals.

As I glanced over the growing crowd I spotted Graham observing from the back, smoking a cigarette whilst chewing his nails – Was he nervous? Who knows? From the tap of his foot and the air guitar playing, it was clear he too was getting into the zone as the final track came to a close. The crowd gave a positive reception and although enthused you could sense they were holding back their anticipation.

The lights drew on to the waiting crowd, instantly a roar erupted as Graham took to the stage. A casual “hello” formed the introduction before the band burst into the first of many emotion-fuelled tracks such as “I don’t wanna go out”, the spectacular (!) “Spectacular” and “Freakin Out” taken from his new album “Happiness in Magazines”.

The intense screaming of guitar distortion combined with drum beats capable of moving your inner organs turned the crowd into a frenzied mosh pit. At this stage a rather poor attempt to crowd surf was seriously hindered by the low ceiling of Fibbers!

The pace calmed. A melodic guitar riff coupled with humorous English lyrics almost gave the crowd enough time to catch breath. This is the track most will relate to, with a sound typical of his indie/pop prestige.

Pace gathered as the evening reached its climax. Graham screamed like a man possessed and the crowd rocked so hard the speakers nearly toppled over! An impressive encore followed and although everybody wanted more - all great things must come to an end.

Graham re-appeared shortly afterwards in the bar, so I grab him for a quick chat before the indie kids formed a queue for autographs.

EJ: “That was a great performance! Did you enjoy that?”

GC: “Yes, I loved it!”

EJ: “So how haves you been occupying your time, what have you been up to in recent months?”

GC: “I’ve been learning how to play traditional acoustic guitar whilst spending time being a dad!”

EJ: “And what are you planning for the future?”

GC: “I’m going to be touring America and Japan and spending more time being a dad”.

The father of indie rock guitar has spoken…

Emma Jackson
