Don’t be fooled by the relaxed name, the Hambleton Strollers are a fit bunch of people! For three years, this group of volunteers has been leading guided walks in the area’s market towns. The idea is to get fit by walking. As the walks are free, frequent and suited to all levels of fitness, it really is an easy way to get fit. The walks are usually less than an hour and are on good level footpaths around the towns and on surrounding field paths when weather conditions allow. | "the group move at a pace brisk enough for individuals to feel an increased heart rate" | |
There may be small gradients, and the occasional stile (though always announced at the start). The walks are relaxed and friendly, but the group move at a pace brisk enough for individuals to feel an increased heart rate and faster breathing. The group welcome anyone to join them in their walks, but especially the over 50s, those with health risks due to inactive lifestyles, those recovering from health problems and those who would just like some company. Most walks start at 10.30am. In summer, fortnightly evening walks start at 6pm in Northallerton. There are also 30-minute lunchtime walks from County Hall in Northallerton which start at 12.15pm. For up-to-date information on when and where walks leave from, follow the link below or contact Marion Archer on 01609 767276 or 0781 2088610.
Strollers’ co-ordinator Marion describes the group’s appeal: “The best thing about the group for me has not only been meeting a hundred or more new friends amongst the walkers but feeling that we are providing a good innovative answer to a local need for exercise provision. But it is the leaders who are the real stars of the show – without them there would be no strolling!” The Hambleton Strollers suggest that walkers continue to exercise more frequently too - on their own or with friends. If you can’t make it to the guided walks, independent walk packs with maps of walk routes are being developed so that people can follow the routes in their own time – and more frequently! The first packs for Stokesley were launched in September 2005. Copies are available from the Co-ordinator, Marion Archer. |
