North West Tonight - School Report

As part of the BBC's School Report initiative, teenagers from across the region were invited to the North West Tonight studios to make a news bulletin about the issues that matter to them. Watch their programme below.

Meet the North West Tonight team of the future; the twelve schoolchildren from across the region who produced and presented their own reports for a special BBC North West Tonight School Report.

Hundreds of schoolchildren across the region have been working on their own stories for BBC News School Report and NWT producer Steve Rawling had the difficult task of picking out the best stories.

Steve takes the story up. "I've been very impressed by the range of stories schools are working on," he said. "They range from what it's really like for teenagers to live in Croxteth to a campaign to save a school in Salford from closure," he said.

Other issues in the childrens' lives were just as important. "One team of reporters wanted to cover the Tanya Byron review into whether video games and the internet are harming kids. They wanted to know what the government's planning to do about these issues, so we managed to get them an interview with the Culture Secretary Andy Burnham," he added.

After a couple of hours screen-testing, Steve had to pick who was going to present North West Tonight School Report.

He admits it was hard. "It was a tough job. Given a bit more time, we could have had everyone up to a really good standard," said Steve.

After a tough process, the presenters were decided. "In the end we chose Chloe from Burnley and Daniel from Salford as news presenters, Hannah from Widnes to present the weather and Ibrahim from Burnage to present the sport," he concluded.

BBC North West Tonight would like to thank students and staff at Unity College, Burnley; Bankfield School, Widnes; Burnage High School, Manchester; Moorhead College, Accrington; St George's High School, Salford and De La Salle High School in Liverpool for taking part in this programme.
